A key focus of research at the Marine Science Center of the University of Rostock in Warnemünde is
on the orientation and navigation mechanisms of harbor seals. Although the movements of harbor
seals in the open sea have been frequently recorded and described, very little is known about the
underlying mechanisms. The systematic investigation of these mechanisms is the goal of this project
funded by the Volkswagen Foundation.

THESE ARE YOUR TASKS:

  • research in the field of orientation/navigation of marine mammals (focus on virtual reality)
  • developing/programming complex stimuli and virtual environments (virtual reality) for scientific behavioral experiments
  • developing a joystick or similar device, along with the corresponding experimental setup/design for behavioral experiments with virtual reality
  • publishing research results (with the opportunity to use the results for personal academic qualification (PhD thesis))
  • assisting with scientific events

THIS MAKES YOU A GOOD FIT:

  • completed university degree (state exam, diploma, master's degree or comparable degree) in a natural science discipline, psychology, computer science, engineering, electrical engineering or a related field with preferably good results
  • excellent programming skills and relevant experience with Unity or similar game engines, as well as knowledge of Matlab
  • practical skills related to the development of a joystick or similar devices
  • minimum physical aptitude for year-round work outdoors in the open water facility
  • willingness to acquire qualifications for operating drones and motorboats
  • confident knowledge of the German and English language, both written and spoken
  • very good ability to work on schedule, communication skills for presenting research results and ability to work in a team
