Due to demographic change, musculoskeletal disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, and fragility fractures are receiving greater attention. Ultimately, these conditions can lead to chronic pain and limited mobility, which have a significant impact on the quality of life of older adults. The SmILE project (Smart Implants for Life enrichment), launched by the Horizon Europe initiative, aims to develop smart implants to combat musculoskeletal disorders and meet growing global healthcare needs. The project focuses on developing a versatile chip platform that can be integrated into a wide range of medical implants. This technology transforms implants into active data generators, enabling rapid and accurate diagnoses that lead to targeted treatment methods.

THESE ARE YOUR TASKS:

  • conducting research in the field of embedded MEMS inertial sensors for implant research as part of the “Smart Implants for Life Enrichment” project
  • developing novel approaches for modeling, simulating, and analyzing embedded sensor subsystems, with a focus on sensor-proximal, firmware-based (pre)processing of sensor data for advanced motion detection in smart implants
  • implementing prototypes of the developed methods, as well as analyzing and evaluating them
  • optimizing the developed methods in terms of runtime and accuracy
  • evaluating and documenting the research results regarding the newly developed approaches
  • submitting scientific articles for publication at conferences and in journals

THIS MAKES YOU A GOOD FIT:

  • completed academic degree (Diplom, Master’s, or equivalent) in electrical engineering, computer science, information technology or a comparable field with at least a “good” grade
  • major in information technology, signal processing, or embedded systems would be desirable
  • professional experience in the field of sensor signal processing in implant research
  • proficiency in the programming languages C, C++ and Python
  • proficiency in spoken and written German and English
  • structured approach to work
  • ability to work independently while demonstrating strong teamwork and communication skills

WE AS AN EMPLOYER:

Equal opportunities are important to us. We welcome applications from suitable severely disabled people or people from traditionally underrepresented groups.
