At the Faculty of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, Institute of General Electrical Engineering, Chair of Electromagnetic Field Theory, we are filling the following position, subject to allocation of funds, as of 01.07.2021 for a limited period for the project interdisciplinary SFB 1270 “Electrically Active Implants – ELAINE“ until 30.06.2025:
The research group “Computational Electromagnetics” focuses on the numerical modeling of electromagnetic problems in electrical engineering, physics, and biology: we research on new algorithms that allow to obtain a fast, stable, accurate prediction of the propagation, radiation, and scattering of electromagnetic waves in intricate, multi-scale media and multi-physics scenarios.
The research is carried out within the framework of an interdisciplinary joint project and offers the possibility of a doctorate. The interdisciplinary cooperative research cluster ELAINE investigates electrically active implants for deep brain stimulation and for bone and cartilage regeneration by electrical stimulation. In this specific project of ELAINE, the goal is to design smart implants with diagnostic capabilities in order to assess the status of bone regrowth via electrical impedance measurements. To derive implants with the aforementioned sensing capabilities and to evaluate their performance, the predictive power of computational electromagnetics will be used. Among the existing methods to solve Maxwell's equations, this project will leverage and advance the boundary element method (BEM) since it promises better performance. More specifically, the project will focus on the investigation and implementation of novel algorithms to model bio-electromagnetic scenarios with complex tissue-implant compounds from zero to microwave frequencies.
