A PhD research position in the department of Microbiology on a DFG funded project studying mutations and genome stability in Thermoanaerobacter kivui. As a thermophilic anaerobe capable of growth at 66°C on the gasses H2 and CO2, T. kivui has enormous potential for industrial biotechnology.

THESE ARE YOUR TASKS:

  • research in the field of microbial genetics with the aim of obtaining higher academic qualification (PhD)
  • genome analysis: preparation of DNA and interpretation of sequencing results
  • generated genetically modified strains of T. kivui with molecular biology and genetic techniques
  • share of scientific knowledge and research skills with students in the project
  • data analysis and publication of scientific results

THIS MAKES YOU A GOOD FIT:

  • completed university degree (state exam, diploma, master's degree or comparable degree) in Biology or related field, with focus in Microbiology
  • knowledge and practical experience in the field of microbiology - culturing and characterization of bacteria
  • experience with basic genetic techniques in bacteria (plasmids, transformation, colony screening
  • experience in advanced cloning techniques (ie: CRISPR) , cloning in non-model organisms, or analysing genetic sequences is desirable
  • experience culturing anaerobic microorganisms is desirable
  • profficient written and spoken communication in English
  • at least a basic knowledge of German is desirable
  • willingness to work seriously and with commitment on a project of one's own scientific qualification
  • ability to work on schedule and communication skills for presenting research results
