The Chair of Population Genetics at the University of Rostock was founded in 2024, by Prof. Dr. Mathilde Cordellier. The research is located at the interface between evolution and ecology with the aim of understanding rapid adaptation processes through hybridization. Investigations into the genomes of invertebrate species such as Daphnia offer the unique opportunity to take a look into the past with the help of long-term studies. Planned projects include the genome analysis of sediment cores. In addition, research extends to the evolution of the genome and sex chromosomes in spiders, involving life history experiments, transcriptomics, genome sequencing and bioinformatics.
