The WOBEC project (funded by Biodiversa+ European Biodiversity Partnership) will improve our understanding of the ecosystem of the Weddell Sea from the seafloor to the sea ice. Scientists from the University of Rostock, the Alfred Wegener Institute and seven other European research institutes aim to develop suitable strategies and indicators for possible long-term monitoring.

THESE ARE YOUR TASKS:

  • research in the field of biodiversity and ecosystem function of pelagic, benthic and sympagic habitats
  • integrating existing and new data and calculating primary and/or secondary production, carbon turnover and biodiversity indicators
  • statistical modeling of ecosystem function and biological communities in the Weddell Sea
  • creating a statistical or conceptual model of carbon flux in the Weddell Sea ecosystem
  • participation on Polarstern cruise WOBEC PS152 (December 2025 - February 2026)
  • publication of research results in relevant peer-reviewed journals and exchange with the scientific community

THIS MAKES YOU A GOOD FIT:

  • completed university degree (state exam, diploma, master's degree or comparable degree) in biology, marine science or a comparable subject area, as well as a PhD or doctorate degree
  • several years of relevant experience in statistical ecosystem analysis or modeling, laboratory analysis and benthos
  • experience in peer-reviewed publication
  • experience in shipboard research and the polar marine ecosystem is an asset
  • minimum physical aptitude for work at sea
  • willingness to participate in expeditions at sea lasting several weeks
  • proficient English skills, both written and spoken
  • good communication skills for the presentation of research results and dialog with stakeholders
  • ability to work in an interdisciplinary team
