We are looking for a postdoctoral scientist to join our quantum technology group as soon as possible, for a project on scanning probe imaging using novel optically readable spin qubits under ambient and cryogenic conditions. One key goal of this work will be to push single-spin scanning probe microscopy towards atomic resolution by reducing the sensor-sample distance. This will employ contact-mode imaging using low-friction 2D materials like boron nitride as an atomically thin lubricant.

THESE ARE YOUR TASKS:

Specifically, the work will comprise:

  • deposition of ordered arrangements of fluorescent molecules on boron nitride by wet-chemistry and sublimation processes
  • encapsulation of molecules in boron nitride by stamping assembly of multilayer heterostructures
  • use of encapsulated fluorescent molecules as scanning probes in a planar scanning probe setup
  • near-field microscopy of plasmonic nanostructures and near-field energy transfer by scanning fluorescent molecules and NV centers in diamond
  • translation of these results into a cryogenic scanning probe setup. Design and construction of an integrated scanning probe head for operation under cryogenic conditions.
  • publication of the results and dissemination in talks on national and international conferences
  • acquisition and further development of the skills required to independently lead a research group and to conceive, develop and carry out research projects independently

THIS MAKES YOU A GOOD FIT:

  • completed university degree (state exam, diploma, master's degree or comparable degree) in a STEM subject, peferably physics, and with preferably excellent results
  • PhD degree in physics with at least very good results
  • strong background in design and construction of electronic systems, e.g. for transport measurements or microwave control of excitations
  • strong background in design and construction of cryogenic experiments, preferably in the area of transport or scanning probe physics
  • strong background in device assembly from 2D materials and other low-dimensional systems, or clear potential and willingness to build expertise in these domains
  • excellent academic track record
  • ability to cooperate in a diverse team and in an interdisciplinary environment
  • willingness to investigate scientific questions in depth and search for fundamental understanding of phenomena
  • fluent English language proficiency, and willingness to build basic proficiency in German

WE AS AN EMPLOYER:

Equal opportunities are important to us. We welcome applications from suitable severely disabled people or people from traditionally underrepresented groups. We aim to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and therefore encourage suitably qualified women to apply. We welcome applications from people of other nationalities or with a migration background.
